The Monterey County Planning Commission will discuss new short-term rental regulations at the end of November 2017. Monterey County recently hired technology firm Host Compliance to help them crack down on the number of illegal short-term rental properties in the county.
Prior to working with Host Compliance, Monterey County had not enforced zoning laws that prohibit short-term renting. Upon stricter enforcement using Host Compliance’s software, the number of illegal listings has dropped by over 50%.
Monterey County does not currently ban short-term rentals but doesn’t allow them either. The County currently has no specific regulations to manage the growing issue of private homes being rented on booking platforms such as Airbnb. It instead relies on zoning laws. This will change with the introduction of the new short-term rental regulations later in the year.
